Mechanical or pneumatic seed drill

The strengths of each design, and which suits which farm.
Seed drills differ in how the seed is metered and carried to the coulters. That affects accuracy, work rate and price.
Mechanical drills
Simple, reliable and affordable. Well suited to cereals on small and medium farms, and easy to maintain.
Pneumatic drills
A fan carries the seed from a central hopper, which allows wider working widths, larger hoppers and more even distribution across the width. They suit larger areas and higher work rates.
What to check on a used drill
The metering units, coulter or disc wear, the condition of the hoses on pneumatic drills, and whether the control terminal works.
