What to check when buying a used tractor

· Povilas Pinelis · 1 min read

A checklist for inspecting a used tractor before you agree a price.

A used tractor can be excellent value, but only if you know what you are buying. Take this checklist with you and set aside at least an hour.

Paperwork first

Check that the serial number matches the documents, and ask for the service history and invoices for major repairs. A tractor with a documented history is worth more.

Engine

  • Start it from cold. Excessive smoke, knocking or hard starting are warning signs.
  • Look for oil and coolant leaks, and check the oil for traces of coolant.
  • Check that the hour meter reading matches the wear on pedals, seat and steering wheel.

Transmission and hydraulics

Drive the tractor through every gear and range, forwards and backwards, under load if you can. Lift a heavy implement on the three-point linkage and watch whether it holds its height. Test every spool valve.

Axles, tyres and cab

Look for play in the front axle and steering, uneven tyre wear and cracks in the rims. In the cab, check the air conditioning, the electrics and every warning light.
